Dissolve sand in soda at furnace heat and you get one of chemistry’s oldest industrial products: Sodium Silicate, known since the early 1800s as Water Glass. Two centuries later, this inorganic veteran still refuses retirement — because almost nothing binds, builds, seals and stabilises so cheaply at once.

One chemistry, five industries

Detergent makers build powders and liquids on silicate’s alkalinity and corrosion-protecting film. Foundries bind sand moulds and cores with it — pour, gas-set, cast. Corrugators and paper converters run it as the classic economical adhesive. Construction waterproofs and densifies concrete with silicate treatments. And drilling fluids use silicate muds as one of the most effective shale-stabilising water-based systems ever devised. Few molecules cover that spread; fewer do it at commodity price.

The ratio is the recipe

Silicate is specified by its SiO2:Na2O ratio — more silica means more binding and film-forming; more soda means more alkalinity — plus Baumé and solids.
