Some chemistry simply refuses to be replaced. Carboxymethyl Cellulose — CMC — was first commercialised in the early twentieth century, and a century later it remains a backbone additive in water-based drilling fluids on every continent. The reason is elegant economics: a cellulose backbone (nature’s most abundant polymer) carrying carboxymethyl groups that make it water-soluble, viscosifying and film-forming — performance that synthetic alternatives still struggle to beat on cost.
One molecule, a whole viscosity ladder
The buyer’s decision is not whether CMC but which. CMC UHV delivers maximum viscosity yield per sack — the remote-location economiser. CMC HV (API 13A) is the certified industry standard: rheology and cuttings suspension for everyday water-based systems. Cross the middle of the ladder and the job changes: CMC LV (API 13A) reduces fluid loss while barely touching viscosity, building the thin, tough filter cake that protects formations. And CMC ULV serves heavy, high-solids muds where any added viscosity would push equivalent circulating density past its limit. Four grades, one chemistry, every water-based programme covered.
